Weekly Update

-What is up guys, ✨DeBritto✨ in the house with a RN weekly Update-

A lot has gone down this week, Roc Nations as a whole had its hands full with new releases. Jay Z  and Justin Timberlake won the grammy for best Rap/Sung Collaboration with their hit "Holy Grail," straight from Jay Z's latest album. Jay Z also won another for best music video, starring on "Suite and Tie," also with the smooth JT. J. Cole also went to work and unveiled a new mix tape featuring a few of his label mates, yay!

Roc Nation's official twitter page was "turning up" in preparation of Shakira's and Rihanna's new hit "Can't Remember to Forgot You." These two sexy artist from the RN label shook up their fans with this new song with the VERY entertaining video. The tweet above directly relates to fans and provides us with an example of pathos. It's purpose was clear considering the timing of the tweet, minutes before the exclusive video was premiered and exited its fans. I read the "Are you watching?", as everyone else is watching it, why aren't you? Of course you can read it otherwise but I believe that was the specific purpose to rack in the views. @Tootielovely was definitely ready!

J. Cole turned 29 this week! As a celebratory reward to all his loving fans, he released his first 2014 mixtape on the 28th (which is his Bday if you didn't know... ) called, "Revenge of the Dreamers," with 11 fresh pieces. In his tweet above, you can see how J. Cole tries to include his audience in his celebration of life and success. I believe Cole scooped up some extra appeal and support from his followers with his birthday mixtape tactic. Smart move Cole, this tweet also exemplifies some pathos, as well as his ethos from his reputation for deeply and sincerely appreciating his strong fan base.
Unlike the rest, Jay Z has not personally released any new information or songs, but recently on his Facebook page he has made sure to let the world know about his brand new Grammies. Unlike the other two tweets from Roc Nation and J. Cole, Jay Z included a direct link to his grammy worthy song. This is probably the reason this social media post got so much more love. Post such as this one with videos are almost too convenient to scroll by.  Jay has long been in the rap game so he already shines with both intrinsic and extrinsic ethos, the grammy awards are just multipliers to his fame and reputation.

Each of my big three this week have exemplified aspects of pathos. Roc Nation and its artist have had quite the exciting January with new releases, a birthday boy within the label, and Grammy wins to the big man himself. Out of my three topic choices, Jay Z stood out in terms of social media, simply because what beats a Grammy? But actually, the grammy worthy song as a Facebook post without a doubt attracted the most attention from fans. Anyways, this has been my update of the week, DeBritto out.

JAY Z J COLE & ROC NATION

Who?
I want to talk about an old school rapper, new school rapper, and the industry they both hail from. As a rap artist, self-advertising is an important part of the game and the two chosen are among the most well-known musicians from Roc Nations. Roc Nations is an entertainment company founded and owned by Jay Z which includes artist, song writers, music publishing, touring, and merchandising. As a company, its have the responsibility of advertising its members and paraphernalia of its partners such as Trapstar.

Why?
Rappers of this generation use social media as an easy but effective way to reach out and have their art heard. For example J. Cole uses twitter often to announce his tour dates and shares info about what is occurring in the industry. One tweet about a new album from any aspiring artist would spread the word almost instantaneously throughout the entire internet. Successful artist are capable of not only writing good music, but also by positively reaching the hearts and minds of his/her fan base through his/her promotions which is made convenient and possible through social media.

Problems?
Currently discussed issues that are prominent within the music industry are piracy and privacy. These rappers as well as Roc Nation must find a balance in how much they/it should release to the public because unfortunately theft and a loss of privacy are bound to happen when utilizing social media websites.
